Heraklion Port Authority has announced that it has won two key awards.

In a ceremony that took place in the Athens Concert Hall Megaro Moussikis on March 12, the Port of Heraklion received the the Gold Prize for “Recycling – Liquid & Solid Waste Management” in the “Sustainability & Operations” category and the Silver Prize for “Tourist Period Extending Initiatives” in the “Strategy & Innovation” category.

"Heraklion is both a strategic East Mediterranean cruise port and a vital coastal shipping hub that links Crete to the mainland and the Aegean Archipelago," said Ioannis Bras, president and managing director of the port.

"With this in mind and in spite of the current economic crisis, we are determined to continue with the effort that we began in 2010. From the many small and large projects that will materialize in the coming period, most are aimed at further improving passenger services, as well as enriching overall tourist experience. More integrated port features will be added to provide useful information and new opportunities to interact with the destination. This special focus on tourist experience is the key to a successful cruise development and also benefits Greek tourism in general."
