Building for Asia: High Service Speeds

The SuperStar Aquarius is among five ships sailing for Star currently. The Asian cruise market may bring with it a number of implications to newbuilding designs for vessels dedicated to Asia.

A set of new Star Cruises vessels due in 2016 and 2017 remain relatively secret, but now feature a balcony ratio of approximately 66.9 percent.

Cruise lines optimizing newbuilds for Asia service need to look at hull designs for high service speed, according to a presentation from Meyer Werft at the China Cruise Shipping Expo hosted by the China Cruise and Yacht Industry Association in Tianjin, as most cruises are just three to five days. Higher service speed would offer not only more ports but a better diversification of itineraries.

Interior design for the Asian market includes fewer gift ships, but more luxury outlets and duty-free shopping.

While there is a relatively minor focus on bars and lounges, there is a major push for extensive casino space with smoking. Asian passengers are less interested in sun decks and pool areas, and look for Asian buffets with table space for multi-generational families, as well as upscale karaoke lounges.
