Being the “south gate of China” and a favorite tourist beach resort town, Sanya has a year-round climate conducive to cruise calls.
At press time, Sanya was expecting to receive 95 calls with an estimated 200,000 passengers for 2014.
However its single berth for ships up to 80,000 tons will restrict future growth.
Hence the Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal (PIICT) phase two development program is underway with an investment of $480 million, including four more berths for varying ship sizes, up to 225,000 tons.
When completed, PIICT will be able to berth five ships at the same time. This is part of a larger Phoenix Island development which will cost over 18b RMB including a man-made island, a seven-star hotel and an international conference center.
Sanya will be one of many Chinese ports at the China Cruise Shipping event.
The ninth edition of the China Cruise Shipping and International Expo is the Asia/Pacific’s No. 1 cruise event, learn more at http://www.ccyia.com/ccs/EN/index.htm. The show takes place Oct. 15-17 in Tianjin, China.
