4/25/08 - Blohm + Voss Repair: Another Cruise Liner to be Modernized PDF Print E-mail
At the end of April, ships are being repaired at  Blohm + Voss Repair in close succession: After the cruise liner GTV SUMMIT had been docked in ELBE 17 for about two weeks for the installation of a new diesel generator, on April 27, around 7:30 p.m. the BRILLIANCE OF THE SEAS will follow. Owned by the Norwegian-American company ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINES, a new genset will be installed in addition to other miscellaneous work to be carried out. For the second time in close succession, Blohm + Voss Repair demonstrates that on-time modernization of cruise liners has become a speciality of the Hamburg-based company which is part of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

The new diesel genset with a power of about 12 MW will be used in addition to the existing gas turbines. For the installation of the 210 tons unit, a new steel foundation will be installed and 70 metres of exhaust line will be laid. During the docking period, the bearings of both main propulsion units (pods) will be replaced and various other maintenance works, improvements and conversions will be completed. The underwater coating will be renewed as well.

After the JEWEL OF THE SEAS - docked in Hamburg at the end of last year - the BRILLIANCE OF THE SEAS is the second ship of the Radiance class of ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINES to be modernized at Blohm + Voss Repair within six months.
