4/14/08 - Blohm + Voss Repair: New Genset for Cruise Liner GTV SUMMIT PDF Print E-mail
On Sunday, April 13, 2008, at about 23.00 h, the GTV SUMMIT will be docked in dry dock ELBE 17 of Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH in Hamburg – a company of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG. The almost 300 meter long cruise liner of the Norwegian-American shipping line ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINES LTD. is in service mainly in the Caribbean for the cruise line company CELEBRITY CRUISES. In the course of a two-week dockyard period, the vessel will be equipped with a new diesel genset.

Rising fuel costs are the reason for the replacement of the genset. Provided with a new state-of-the-art approx. 11,000 kW diesel genset, the fuel consumption of the cruise liner will be considerably reduced. For the installation of the unit, a 100 tons steel section will be installed and exhaust lines with a total length of about 70 meter will have to be rearranged. In addition to this, the outer coating below the waterline will be renewed and the main engine plant overhauled.

Once again, the tight schedule for the work to be completed combined with the very short preparation phase is a challenge to Blohm + Voss Repair to prove its adherence to delivery deadlines. On April 27, 2008, the GTV SUMMIT will leave the yard so as to make space for another ship of ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINES; the GTV BRILLIANCE OF THE SEAS is expected to arrive in Hamburg soon after and will be provided with a new genset as well.
